The Chirripó Steep Creek Race sends the world's best paddlers down the Chirripó Pacífico, a relentless class IV–V boulder garden beneath Cerro Chirripó, Costa Rica's tallest peak. Upstream sits a Class V rapid called La Bestia (yes, "The Beast"), and that's where the podium gets decided.

In 2026 it steps up to host the AWP Extreme Kayak Pan-American Championship, a world-ranking event on the Association of Whitewater Professionals circuit.

El Chirripó Steep Creek Race lanza a los mejores kayakeros del mundo por el Chirripó Pacífico, un implacable jardín de rocas clase IV–V bajo el Cerro Chirripó, el pico más alto de Costa Rica. Río arriba está un rápido clase V llamado La Bestia, y ahí es donde se decide el podio.

En 2026 da el salto para albergar el Campeonato Panamericano de Kayak Extremo de la AWP, un evento de ranking mundial del circuito de la Association of Whitewater Professionals.

The race runs at Canaán de Rivas, a small mountain town at around 1,200 m in the Pérez Zeledón canton of southern Costa Rica — at the foot of Cerro Chirripó, the country's highest peak.

The 16 drop La Bestia one last time. A champion is crowned. Then the riverbank turns into a festival — DJ, live band, food, and the whole town until dark.

Between heats, the riverbank is one big party, on and off the water. From Chile to Slovenia, kayakers and spectators mix with people of every age, kids and families, and everyone from up-and-coming paddlers to Red Bull athletes. Restaurants like Batsú and Kapi Kapi become race HQ, and finals night brings a DJ, a live band, food and dancing until dark.

Entre mangas, la orilla es pura fiesta, dentro y fuera del río. De Chile a Eslovenia, se juntan kayakeros y espectadores, gente de todas las edades, niños, familias, y desde atletas emergentes hasta kayakeros de Red Bull. Restaurantes como Batsú y Kapi Kapi se vuelven el cuartel de la carrera, y la noche de finales trae DJ, banda en vivo, comida y baile hasta el anochecer.

In partnership with MINAE, Costa Rica's environment ministry, every competitor receives a native tree to take home and plant. Many of them live along or near the rivers, so the race gives back to the watershed with every entry.

En alianza con el MINAE, el ministerio de ambiente de Costa Rica, cada competidor recibe un árbol nativo para llevárselo y sembrarlo. Muchos viven a la orilla o cerca de los ríos, así que la carrera le devuelve a la cuenca con cada inscripción.

We're Travis Belville and Diego Solano, friends and paddling partners for close to two decades. We've run the best whitewater in the Americas together, and spent a lot of that time hunting down new rivers right here in Costa Rica. Diego grew up paddling in Turrialba; Amelia, Travis's wife, was born and raised in Canaán. This river is special to us.

So we built a race on it. We run it as a nonprofit, and the money goes back into three things: the race, the town, and the sport. We put on kayak programs for young local athletes, because paddling has given us everything, and we want the next generation to get the same shot.

Somos Travis Belville y Diego Solano, amigos y compañeros de kayak por casi dos décadas. Hemos corrido las mejores aguas bravas de América juntos, y pasamos mucho de ese tiempo buscando ríos nuevos aquí en Costa Rica. Diego creció haciendo kayak en Turrialba; Amelia, la esposa de Travis, nació y creció en Canaán. Este río es especial para nosotros.

Así que construimos una carrera sobre él. La operamos sin fines de lucro, y el dinero vuelve a tres cosas: la carrera, el pueblo y el deporte. Hacemos programas de kayak para jóvenes atletas locales, porque palear nos lo ha dado todo, y queremos que la próxima generación tenga la misma oportunidad.
