Chirripó Steep Creek Race

Chirripó Steep Creek Race 2026
November 26th, 27th and 29th

The Chirripo Steep Creek Race 2026 is set to take place this year on the last weekend of November on the 27th, 28th and 29th.  These dates promise proper flows for what will be the most exciting and competitive Chirripo Steep Creek Race yet.

This year we are stoked to host the EXTREME KAYAK PAN-AMERICAN CHAMPIONSHIP as part of the Association Whitewater Professionals (AWP) world ranking races.  Hosting this AWP event alongside the Chirripó Steep Creek Race is sure to raise the level of competition and gives us a great stage to showcase the local and international extreme kayak athletes as they race navigating one of the steepest and challenging rivers in Costa Rica.

Join us for an adrenaline-charged extreme kayak race down the Chirripó Pacífico river, hosted in the beautiful mountain town of Canaan de Rivas, Costa Rica.  The Chirripo Pacifico river is known for its class IV & V boulder garden style rapids, set against the stunning backdrop of Costa Rica’s tallest mountain, Cerro Chirripó, and the town Canaan offers the warm mountain vibes for the perfect river experience.

Canaán de Rivas

Canaán is nestled 1200 meters above sea level in the mountains  near Costa Rica’s tallest peak, Cerro Chirripó, and home to the impressive Chirripó Pacífico river. With its warm people, rich heritage, and enchanting natural landscape, Canaán offers a unique experience for spectators and competitors alike. Expect the small town to be buzzing with kayaking, visitors, locals and good vibes for the whole weekend.

The town and surrounding areas have a vibrant community, and for our local and international visitors, this is a golden opportunity to immerse yourself in a culture celebrated for its hospitality while enjoying this unbeatable paddling experience on the river, hiking in the mountains, the race and all of its surprises! Canaan also boasts a vibrant community of artisans, including Quesos de Canaan, a biodynamic farm with a focus on artisanal cheese production. Additionally, you’ll find a delightful Chocolatier Shop, Bakery, and the inviting Batsú gastropub, among others. Local coffee producers contribute to the town’s diverse offerings, and don’t miss the awe-inspiring Casa Alegría, a seven-frequency butterfly dome sanctuary.
